I falsi amici

Camera = room, libreria = bookstore, attualmente = currently: the high-frequency traps.

Falsi amici (false friends) are words that look or sound like English cognates but mean something else. Italian shares thousands of words with English (both languages built much of their vocabulary on Latin), and most of the time the resemblance helps. But a stubborn list of high-frequency words betrays the learner: camera is not a camera (it's a room); libreria is not a library (it's a bookstore); attualmente does not mean actually (it means currently); eventualmente does not mean eventually (it means possibly, if the case arises). Misuse them and you'll be understood, but you'll mark yourself as an English-speaker. This lesson is a curated tour through the dozen traps that catch every learner. Memorize the Italian meaning and the correct English equivalent — and learn the Italian word that DOES translate the English false friend.

Things and places: camera, libreria, fattoria, magazzino

camera = room (especially bedroom or hotel room). camera da letto = bedroom; camera d'albergo = hotel room. The English camera is macchina fotografica or just fotocamera. libreria = bookstore OR bookshelf. The English library is biblioteca. So vado in libreria a comprare un libro (I'm going to the bookstore) vs. vado in biblioteca a studiare (I'm going to the library). fattoria = farm. The English factory is fabbrica. lavora in una fabbrica di automobili = he works in a car factory; i miei nonni avevano una fattoria in campagna = my grandparents had a farm. magazzino = warehouse / stockroom. The English magazine (the publication) is rivista; the English department store is grande magazzino. So leggo una rivista (I'm reading a magazine) but lavora in un magazzino (he works in a warehouse).

Time adverbs: attualmente, eventualmente

These two are the deadliest pair. attualmente = currently / at present (NOT actually). Attualmente lavoro a Milano. = I currently work in Milan. The English actually is in realtà or a dire il vero: In realtà non sono d'accordo. = Actually I disagree. eventualmente = possibly / if necessary / should the case arise (NOT eventually). Eventualmente possiamo rimandare la riunione. = If necessary, we can postpone the meeting. The English eventually is alla fine, prima o poi: Alla fine ha accettato. = He eventually accepted. Mixing these up changes your meaning entirely: saying attualmente non sono d'accordo would mean 'currently I disagree' (a temporary state) when you meant 'actually I disagree' (a contradiction).

People and personality: sensibile, educato, simpatico

sensibile = sensitive (emotionally responsive, easily affected). una persona sensibile = a sensitive person. The English sensible (reasonable, practical) is ragionevole, sensato: una decisione ragionevole = a sensible decision. educato = polite, well-mannered (NOT educated in the academic sense). un bambino educato = a polite, well-behaved child. The English educated (with education, learned) is istruito, colto: una persona colta = an educated/cultured person. simpatico is not exactly false but worth flagging: it means likeable, friendly, nice — NOT 'sympathetic' (which is comprensivo, empatico). Marco è molto simpatico. = Marco is very likeable / a nice guy. Sono simpatici i tuoi amici. = Your friends are nice.

Verbs: assistere, firmare, pretendere

assistere a = to attend, to be present at (NOT to assist). assistere a una conferenza = to attend a conference; assistere a uno spettacolo = to attend a show. The English to assist (= to help) is aiutare. So mi puoi aiutare? = can you help me?, NOT *mi puoi assistere. (Note: assistente as a noun does mean assistant, and assistere qualcuno without a can mean to take care of someone — e.g. assistere un malato = to care for a sick person. The trap is the verb's most frequent meaning.) firmare = to sign (your name). The English to firm (up) is rafforzare or consolidare. firma qui = sign here. pretendere = to demand, to insist on, to expect (often arrogantly). The English to pretend (= to feign) is fingere or far finta di. Pretende di essere pagato il doppio. = He demands to be paid double. Faceva finta di dormire. = He was pretending to sleep.

Concepts: argomento, parente, romanzo, accidenti

argomento = topic, subject (NOT argument in the sense of a quarrel). L'argomento della lezione è... = The topic of the lesson is... The English argument (a quarrel) is litigio, discussione: abbiamo avuto una discussione = we had an argument. (Note: argomento CAN mean argument in the philosophical sense — a reasoning, a point: un argomento convincente = a convincing argument. The trap is the everyday quarrel meaning.) parente = relative (family member). The English parent (mother or father) is genitore. So i miei parenti = my relatives (uncles, cousins, etc.); i miei genitori = my parents. romanzo = novel. The English romance is storia d'amore or relazione amorosa. Sto leggendo un romanzo di Calvino. = I'm reading a novel by Calvino. accidenti! = darn! / damn! (interjection). NOT 'accidents'. The English accident (a crash, mishap) is incidente. Ho avuto un incidente in macchina. = I had a car accident.

Quick-reference table: don't say X, say Y

Memorize as English → Italian: actually → in realtà, NOT attualmente. eventually → alla fine / prima o poi, NOT eventualmente. library → biblioteca, NOT libreria. camera → macchina fotografica, NOT camera. factory → fabbrica, NOT fattoria. magazine → rivista, NOT magazzino. sensible → ragionevole, NOT sensibile. to assist → aiutare, NOT assistere a. to pretend → fingere, NOT pretendere. educated → istruito / colto, NOT educato. argument (quarrel) → litigio / discussione, NOT argomento. parent → genitore, NOT parente. accident → incidente, NOT accidenti. romance → storia d'amore, NOT romanzo. The fastest way to lock these in: build sentences with the WRONG English meaning to feel the wrongness, then build sentences with the RIGHT Italian meaning.
