nicht vs kein

Two ways to say 'no' — and which one to use when.

German has two negation words and they are not interchangeable. nicht (not) negates verbs, adjectives, adverbs, or whole sentences. kein (no / not a) replaces an indefinite article (ein) or a no-article noun. Pick the wrong one and the sentence sounds broken — pick the right one and you can say no to anything.

kein replaces ein

If a positive sentence has ein/eine before the noun, the negative sentence uses kein/keine. Ich habe ein Auto.Ich habe kein Auto. = 'I don't have a car.' Sie hat eine Schwester.Sie hat keine Schwester. Kein also replaces no article at all (mass nouns and plurals): Ich trinke Wasser.Ich trinke kein Wasser. = 'I don't drink water.' Wir haben Kinder.Wir haben keine Kinder.

kein declines like ein

Same endings as ein / mein. Nominative: kein Mann (m.), keine Frau (f.), kein Kind (n.), keine Kinder (pl.). Accusative: keinen Mann, keine Frau, kein Kind, keine Kinder — only the masculine adds -en, exactly like einen. Ich habe keinen Bruder. = 'I don't have a brother.'

nicht for everything else

Use nicht to negate a verb, an adjective, an adverb, a definite-article noun, or a proper noun. Ich verstehe nicht. = 'I don't understand.' Das Buch ist nicht neu. = 'The book isn't new.' Er kommt nicht aus Berlin. Anna ist nicht müde. Ich kenne den Mann nicht. (definite article → nicht, not kein).

Where nicht goes

Two reliable rules of thumb. (1) To negate the whole sentence / the verb, nicht goes at the end: Ich verstehe das nicht. Er arbeitet heute nicht. (2) To negate a specific word, nicht goes right before it: Das Buch ist nicht neu. Ich komme nicht aus Berlin, sondern aus München. Don't agonize over edge cases — these two cover almost everything you'll meet at A1.

Quick test: ein? → kein. otherwise? → nicht.

Faced with a sentence to negate, ask: 'Is the noun introduced with ein / no article at all?' If yes, use kein. If the noun has der / das / die / mein / a name, or the thing being negated isn't a noun, use nicht. Ich habe ein Buch.Ich habe kein Buch. Ich lese das Buch.Ich lese das Buch nicht.
