一边...一边... / 不但...而且... / 虽然...但是... / 不仅...也...

Two clauses, two markers — Mandarin's love of bookends.

Mandarin loves correlative pairs — fixed expressions that span two clauses with a marker in each. They're more rigid than English 'not only... but also...' because the markers have to sit in specific positions: usually right BEFORE the verb. This lesson teaches four high-frequency pairs: 一边...一边... (doing two things at once), 不但...而且... (not only... but also), 虽然...但是... (although... still...), 不仅...也... (not only... also). Get the position right and these become some of the most useful patterns in mid-A2 speech.

一边 ... 一边 ... — doing two things simultaneously

一边 yìbiān + verb1, 一边 + verb2 = doing both at the same time. Crucially the subject is shared (or implied), and 一边 sits BEFORE each verb, NOT before the subject. 他一边吃饭一边看电视。 = He eats and watches TV at the same time. 我一边走路一边听音乐。 = I walk while listening to music. 她一边笑一边说。 = She laughed as she spoke. Wrong: 一边他吃饭,一边他看电视一边 can't sit before the subject. Both verbs should be activities you can plausibly do in parallel; instantaneous events don't fit (you can't 'one-side fall asleep' in this pattern).

不但 ... 而且 ... — not only ... but also ...

不但 búdàn + clause1, 而且 érqiě + clause2 = the second fact ADDS to and intensifies the first. 他不但会说中文,而且会写汉字。 = He not only speaks Chinese, he also writes Chinese characters. 这家店不但便宜,而且很好吃。 = This restaurant is not only cheap, it's also delicious. Position rule: when both clauses share a subject, 不但 goes AFTER the subject, before the verb/adjective: 他不但... (subject + 不但). When the subjects are DIFFERENT, 不但 goes at the start of clause 1, before its subject: 不但他来了,他妈妈也来了。 = Not only did he come, his mom came too. 而且 sits at the start of clause 2 either way. A common variant uses 也 / 还 in clause 2 instead of (or alongside) 而且: 他不但会说中文,还会写汉字。

虽然 ... 但是 ... — although ... still ...

虽然 suīrán + concession, 但是 dànshì + main point = even though X, Y nonetheless. 虽然今天下雨,但是我还是要去。 = Even though it's raining today, I still want to go. 虽然他很累,但是他还在工作。 = Even though he's tired, he's still working. The result clause often uses 还是 (still / nonetheless) for extra force. Unlike English, Mandarin keeps BOTH halves of 'although... but...' — dropping 但是 is grammatical but feels unbalanced. Position: 虽然 can sit either before OR after the subject of clause 1; both 虽然他很累... and 他虽然很累... are fine. 但是 sits at the start of clause 2.

不仅 ... 也 ... — not only ... also ... (slightly more formal)

不仅 bùjǐn is a near-synonym of 不但 — same 'not only' meaning, slightly more written / formal in flavor. It pairs with , , or 而且 in the second clause. 她不仅是我的老师,也是我的朋友。 = She's not only my teacher, but also my friend. 学中文不仅有意思,也很有用。 = Studying Chinese isn't just interesting, it's useful too. In conversational speech, 不但...而且... is the more common choice; 不仅...也... shades toward essays, formal writing, and thoughtful speech. The position rules are identical to 不但.

Position rules — the cheat sheet

一边 / 一边: directly BEFORE each verb, after the (shared) subject. 不但 / 不仅: after the subject when subjects are shared; before the subject when they differ. 虽然: flexible, before or after the subject of clause 1. 而且 / 但是 / 也 / 还: at the start of clause 2 (after any subject). Don't try to translate English 'not only' word-for-word — putting 不但 before the subject when subjects are shared is a classic learner mistake. Wrong: 不但他会说中文,而且会写。 Right: 他不但会说中文,而且会写。
