Comparativos
Spanish comparisons are simpler than English in some ways: no '-er / more' choice. Three formulas: more, less, the same. Plus a few irregulars that save breath: mejor, peor, mayor, menor.
More / less: más / menos + … + que
más + adj./adv./noun + que = more … than. menos + … + que = less … than. Madrid es más grande que Sevilla = Madrid is bigger than Seville. Yo soy menos alto que tú = I'm shorter than you. With a noun: Tengo más libros que tú (I have more books than you).
The same: tan / tanto + como
With an adjective or adverb — tan: Soy tan alto como mi hermano (I'm as tall as my brother). With a noun — tanto/tanta/tantos/tantas (agrees with the noun): Tengo tantos libros como tú (I have as many books as you). With a verb — tanto: Como tanto como tú (I eat as much as you).
Numbers in comparisons
Before a number, use más/menos de, not que. Tengo más de diez años = I'm older than 10. Hay menos de cien estudiantes = there are fewer than 100 students. Easy to forget.
Irregular comparatives
bueno → mejor (better). malo → peor (worse). grande → mayor (older / larger). pequeño → menor (younger / smaller). No más: you say es mejor que tú, not más bueno que. mayor and menor are mostly about age: mi hermano mayor (my older brother). Mi café es mejor que el tuyo = my coffee is better than yours.
Superlative: el más
el/la/los/las + más/menos + adj. + de = the most … of. Madrid es la ciudad más grande de España (Madrid is the biggest city in Spain). Irregulars: el mejor, el peor, el mayor, el menor. Es el mejor día de mi vida = it's the best day of my life.
Intensifier -ísimo
Bonus tool: the suffix -ísimo turns an adjective up to 11. bueno → buenísimo (excellent). grande → grandísimo. fácil → facilísimo. Agrees with gender and number: una casa grandísima.
