Pretérito imperfecto

Describing the past: 'was', 'used to', 'would'.

Third past tense. If indefinido is 'it happened once and ended', imperfecto is the backdrop: what was around, what used to happen, what the weather was like, how old you were, what you loved as a kid. The closest English match: 'used to' / 'was -ing' / 'would' (habitual past).

Regular -AR

Endings: -aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -abais, -aban. hablar → hablaba, hablabas, hablaba, hablábamos, hablabais, hablaban. trabajaba, estudiaba, compraba, cantaba — all the same pattern.

Regular -ER and -IR

-er and -ir share endings: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían. comer → comía, comías, comía, comíamos, comíais, comían. vivir → vivía, vivías, vivía, vivíamos, vivíais, vivían. All forms carry the accent.

Only three irregular verbs!

Lucky for once: only three exceptions. ser → era, eras, era, éramos, erais, eran. ir → iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban. ver → veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veíais, veían. Everything else is regular.

When to use it

1) Habitual actions in the past: Cuando era niño, jugaba mucho (when I was a kid, I used to play a lot). 2) Description (weather, age, state): Hacía frío, eran las tres, estaba cansado. 3) Two simultaneous actions: Mientras yo leía, ella escribía (while I was reading, she was writing). 4) An ongoing action interrupted by indefinido: Comía cuando llegó mi amigo (I was eating when my friend arrived).

Contrast with indefinido

Ayer fui al mercado (indefinido) — specific action, one time. Antes iba al mercado todos los días (imperfecto) — habit. Cuando era pequeño… (imperfecto) — describing a period. Hizo mucho calor en agosto (indefinido) — event as a whole. Hacía calor mientras caminábamos (imperfecto) — backdrop. The contrast is what makes it click.

How it maps to English

English 'I used to go to school' → imperfecto (iba). 'I went to school yesterday' → indefinido (fui). 'I was eating when she arrived' → imperfecto + indefinido (comía cuando llegó). Trigger words: antes (before), siempre (always), todos los días (every day), de niño (as a child), mientras (while) → usually imperfecto.
