Talking about how you travel

By plane, by train, by foot — and how Russian marks the means.

Russian uses на + prepositional to say what vehicle you take, but the instrumental for some other modes. There's also a vocabulary set for booking, arriving, leaving — and the formal verb путешествовать for traveling generally.

на + prepositional = by (transport)

- на поезде = by train - на машине = by car - на автобусе = by bus - на самолёте = by plane - на метро = by metro - на такси = by taxi Note: на here doesn't mean 'on top of' — it's the conventional preposition for means of transport.

пешком — on foot

An adverb, no preposition needed. Я иду пешком. = I'm going on foot. Мы пошли в парк пешком. = We walked to the park.

Travel verbs

- путешествовать = to travel (in general). Я-form: путешествую. - ездить / поехать / приехать = the multidirectional / perfective travel-by-vehicle verbs from earlier lessons. - лететь / летать = to fly (one trip / regularly). - плыть / плавать = to swim / sail.

Booking and timing

- билет = ticket. Билет на поезд = a train ticket. - забронировать = to book (perfective). - отель / гостиница = hotel. - остановиться = to stop / stay (e.g. at a hotel). Я остановился в гостинице. = I stayed at a hotel.

Examples

Я еду в Москву на поезде.

I'm going to Moscow by train.

Анна летит в Россию на самолёте.

Anna is flying to Russia by plane.

Иван идёт в школу пешком.

Ivan is walking to school.

пешком — adverb.

Мы забронировали билеты.

We booked the tickets.

Я остановилась в маленькой гостинице.

I stayed at a small hotel.
