Advérbios em -mente, irregulares e locuções adverbiais

From -mente to de repente — building and placing adverbs in EP.

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. Portuguese builds many of them with the suffix -mente, attached to the FEMININE singular form of an adjective: rápido (m) → rápida (f) → rapidamente; fácil (no fem. change) → facilmente; docedocemente. A few high-frequency adverbs are IRREGULAR and don't take -mente: bem (well), mal (badly), depressa (fast), devagar (slowly). Many ideas are expressed as LOCUÇÕES ADVERBIAIS — multi-word adverbial phrases — instead of single adverbs: de repente (suddenly), com cuidado (carefully), sem dúvida (without a doubt), à vontade (at ease). When you chain two or more -mente adverbs, drop the suffix from all but the LAST: fácil e rapidamente = easily and quickly. Position is mostly free, but with rules of thumb: manner adverbs follow the verb, frequency adverbs come before the verb or at the start, and with compound tenses adverbs slot between the auxiliary and the main verb.

Forming adverbs with -mente

RULE: take the FEMININE singular of the adjective and add -mente. rápidorápidarapidamente. lentolentalentamente. cuidadosocuidadosacuidadosamente. tranquilotranquilatranquilamente. sériosériaseriamente. If the adjective doesn't change for gender (ends in -e, -l, -z, etc.), just add -mente to the bare form: fácilfacilmente. simplessimplesmente. felizfelizmente. docedocemente. frequentefrequentemente. inteligenteinteligentemente. SPELLING: the adjective LOSES any acute or circumflex accent when -mente is attached, because the stress moves to -mente. rápido keeps its accent (stress on rá-), but rapidamente drops it (stress on men-): not rápidamente. Same: fácilfacilmente, somente, únicounicamente. PHONETICS: -mente is always stressed on the e, so any earlier accent is no longer needed.

Chains of -mente adverbs — drop all but the last

When you join two or more -mente adverbs with e, ou, or a comma, KEEP the -mente ONLY on the LAST one; the earlier ones revert to the bare feminine adjective form. fácil e rapidamente = easily and quickly (not facilmente e rapidamente). lenta mas claramente = slowly but clearly. séria e profundamente = seriously and deeply. calma, paciente e cuidadosamente = calmly, patiently, and carefully. The reason: -mente is felt as a separable suffix; saying it once at the end covers the whole chain. With ONE adverb, you keep -mente as normal: rapidamente by itself stays full. With TWO+ that share the suffix, drop early ones. Note: this only applies when the adverbs are coordinated and modify the same thing. Falou rapidamente, depois saiu lentamente keeps both -mente because they're in separate clauses.

Irregular adverbs — bem, mal, depressa, devagar

Some core adverbs are NOT built with -mente and have their own forms. bem = well — opposite: mal. Falas bem português = you speak Portuguese well. Senti-me mal = I felt bad. depressa = fast / quickly (more colloquial than rapidamente) — Vem depressa! = come quickly! devagar = slowly — Anda devagar = walks slowly. assim = like this / that way — Faz-se assim = it's done like this. mais / menos = more / less — Trabalha mais = works more. muito / pouco as adverbs (invariable when modifying verbs/adjectives): muito cansado = very tired, fala pouco = speaks little. logo = soon / then. cedo = early — levanto-me cedo. tarde = late — chegou tarde. ainda = still / yet. = already / now. Note: bom (adj) → bem (adv); mau (adj) → mal (adv). Don't say boamente or mauamente.

Locuções adverbiais — multi-word adverbs

Many adverbial ideas are expressed as fixed phrases (locuções) rather than single words. Learn them as units. MANNER: de repente = suddenly. de propósito = on purpose. por acaso = by chance / by the way. com cuidado = carefully. com atenção = attentively. sem cuidado = carelessly. à pressa = in a hurry. às claras = openly. às escondidas = secretly. à vontade = at ease / freely. a sério = seriously. a pé = on foot. de cor = by heart (memorized). em silêncio = silently. CERTAINTY/EVALUATION: sem dúvida = without a doubt. com certeza = certainly. de certeza = for sure (EP-favored). por sorte = luckily. infelizmente = unfortunately. felizmente = fortunately. PLACE/TIME: em frente = ahead / in front. ao lado = beside / next door. lá em cima / cá em baixo = up there / down here. de manhã / de tarde / de noite = in the morning / afternoon / evening. à noite = at night. de vez em quando = from time to time. às vezes = sometimes. pouco a pouco = little by little. EP often prefers a locução over a heavy -mente adverb in everyday speech: com cuidado is more natural than cuidadosamente in many contexts.

Position of adverbs

Portuguese has fairly flexible adverb placement, but some patterns hold. (1) MANNER adverbs (how) typically follow the verb or come at the end of the clause: Falou claramente = he spoke clearly. Conduz com cuidado = he drives carefully. (2) FREQUENCY/TIME adverbs (sempre, nunca, já, ainda, frequentemente) usually come BEFORE the main verb, or at the start: Sempre chegava cedo = he always arrived early. Já comi = I already ate. Nunca o vi = I've never seen him. (3) With COMPOUND TENSES (ter + particípio, ir + infinitivo, estar a + infinitivo), the adverb often slots BETWEEN the auxiliary and the main verb: Tenho sempre dito que… = I have always said that…. Tinha já saído = he had already left. Vou rapidamente comprar pão = I'm quickly going to buy bread. (4) muito, pouco, bastante, demasiado as adverbs go BEFORE adjectives or other adverbs: muito feliz, pouco claro, bastante bem. (5) Putting an adverb at the START of a sentence often emphasizes it: Felizmente, chegámos a tempo = fortunately, we arrived on time. Hoje, vou ao mercado = today, I'm going to the market. PITFALL: never split the -mente suffix from its base, even for emphasis (no muito rápida-mente). Repeat the whole adverb if needed for emphasis: muito rapidamente.

Common pitfalls and BR notes

Pitfall 1: forgetting to drop the accent on -mente chain. rápidamente is wrong; it's rapidamente (no acute on a). Pitfall 2: trying to inflect -mente adverbs for gender or number — they're invariable. Eles falaram rapidamente (not rapidamentes). Pitfall 3: in chains, dropping -mente from the LAST adverb instead of the early ones. Wrong: rápida e lenta. Right: rápida e lentamente. Pitfall 4: using bom/mau (adjectives) where bem/mal (adverbs) belong. Wrong: fala bom. Right: fala bem. Pitfall 5: confusing devagar and depressa — they're opposites: devagar = slowly, depressa = fast. Pitfall 6: in EP, de certeza is more idiomatic than BR's com certeza (both exist in both varieties; EP slightly favors de certeza for 'for sure / definitely'). Pitfall 7: bastante as an adverb means 'quite' or 'enough'; as an adjective it agrees in number (bastantes pessoas). Don't confuse the two roles.

Examples

He speaks quickly, but clearly.
