Polite past: -ました / -ませんでした / でした

From -ます to -ました, and from です to でした.

All the polite verbs you've met so far end in -ます (eat, drink, go, come, do, see, listen, study). To put any of them into the past, swap -ます for -ました: たべますたべました ('ate'). The negative past is -ませんでした: たべませんでした ('didn't eat'). The copula です has its own past forms: でした ('was') and じゃ ありませんでした ('was not'). With time markers like きのう and せんしゅう, you can now talk about anything you did yesterday.

-ました — affirmative past

The rule couldn't be cleaner: drop ます, add ました. たべますたべました (ate). のみますのみました (drank). 行きます行きました (went). 来ます来ました (came). 見ます見ました (watched). ききますききました (listened). よみますよみました (read). かいますかいました (bought). しました = did. Time markers like きのう (yesterday), せんしゅう (last week), きょねん (last year) point you to the past, but they don't replace the verb ending — you still need -ました.

-ませんでした — negative past

The negative present -ません (didn't / doesn't) tacks on でした to become past: たべません ('don't eat') → たべませんでした ('didn't eat'). 行きません行きませんでした (didn't go). しませんしませんでした (didn't do). きのう なに も しませんでした。 = 'I didn't do anything yesterday.' Pair it with なに も + negative for 'nothing', だれ も + negative for 'no one'.

でした and じゃ ありませんでした

です ('is') becomes でした ('was'): きのう は どようび でした。 = 'Yesterday was Saturday.' がくせい でした。 = 'I was a student.' The negative じゃ ありません ('isn't') becomes じゃ ありませんでした ('wasn't'): ひま じゃ ありませんでした。 = 'I wasn't free.' The more formal variant では ありませんでした is also fine. Use these with nouns and な-adjectives — い-adjective past is a separate move (next lesson).

Asking about yesterday

Tack on the end as always. きのう なに を しました か。 = 'What did you do yesterday?' どこ に 行きました か。 = 'Where did you go?' だれ と 行きました か。 = 'Who did you go with?' なんじ に おきました か。 = 'What time did you get up?' For yes/no: きのう、しごと を しました か。 = 'Did you work yesterday?'

Common time markers

きのう (yesterday), おととい (the day before yesterday), せんしゅう (last week), せんげつ (last month), きょねん (last year). These don't take — same rule as きょう/あした. Clock times and dates still take : きのう、しちじ に おきました。 = 'Yesterday I got up at 7.' きょねん の よがつ に 来ました。 = 'I came last April.'
