Il trapassato del congiuntivo e la concordanza dei tempi
When the main verb is in the PAST, every subjunctive in the embedded clause has to shift back too. The pair you already know — congiuntivo presente / passato — gets a parallel pair for past triggers: congiuntivo imperfetto for simultaneous/future-relative actions, and trapassato del congiuntivo for anterior ones. The trapassato is formed with the imperfetto del congiuntivo of the auxiliary (avessi, avesse... / fossi, fosse...) plus the past participle. Whole rule of thumb (the concordanza dei tempi, sequence of tenses): MAIN PRESENT + simultaneous → congiuntivo presente; MAIN PRESENT + anterior → congiuntivo passato; MAIN PAST + simultaneous → congiuntivo imperfetto; MAIN PAST + anterior → trapassato del congiuntivo. Master that 2×2 grid and B2 subjunctive becomes mechanical.
Forming the trapassato del congiuntivo
Same agreement rule as always — participles agree with the subject when the auxiliary is essere.
When to use it: anteriority with a past-tense trigger
Use the trapassato del congiuntivo when (a) the main verb is past — imperfetto, passato prossimo, passato remoto, trapassato prossimo, condizionale passato — and (b) the embedded action happened BEFORE the main verb. Examples: Pensavo che fosse già partito. = I thought he had already left. Non sapevo che avessero comprato la casa. = I didn't know they had bought the house. Mi sembrava che lei avesse capito. = It seemed to me she had understood. Avrei voluto che tu fossi venuto. = I would have wanted you to have come. Era strano che non avesse chiamato. = It was strange he hadn't called.
The four-square sequence-of-tenses table
MAIN VERB IN PRESENT (or future, imperative): • simultaneous / posterior embedded → congiuntivo presente. Penso che parta. = I think he's leaving. • anterior → congiuntivo passato. Penso che sia partito. = I think he has left. MAIN VERB IN PAST (imperfetto, passato prossimo, condizionale, condizionale passato): • simultaneous / posterior → congiuntivo imperfetto. Pensavo che partisse. = I thought he was leaving. • anterior → trapassato del congiuntivo. Pensavo che fosse partito. = I thought he had left. The trigger word stays the same — only the time relation changes which subjunctive you reach for.
Past triggers in everyday Italian
The most common past triggers are: pensavo che / credevo che / non sapevo che / mi sembrava che / dubitavo che / temevo che / volevo che / avrei voluto che / era strano che / sarebbe stato meglio che. Reality-discovery sentences love this structure: Pensavo che fosse italiano, ma in realtà è spagnolo. = I thought he was Italian, but actually he's Spanish. Credevo che avessi finito. = I thought you had finished. Note that English often uses 'thought + simple past' where Italian needs the imperfect or trapassato subjunctive — match by time relation, not by English tense.
Periodo ipotetico of the third type — recap
The trapassato del congiuntivo is also the if-clause half of the impossible past hypothetical (covered in lesson 28): Se fossi andato, avrei capito. = If I had gone, I would have understood. Se avessero studiato, avrebbero passato l'esame. = If they had studied, they would have passed the exam. Pattern: se + trapassato congiuntivo, condizionale passato. This is one of the most useful B2/C1 structures — counterfactual regret about a closed past. The same auxiliary forms (fossi, avessi...) drive both the sequence-of-tenses use and the if-clause use.
