Wortbildung — build new words with predictable affixes
Beyond compounding (lesson 042), German builds new words by attaching prefixes (Vorsilben) and suffixes (Nachsilben) to existing roots. Two huge wins for the learner: (1) Prefixes like un-, vor-, nach-, miss-, wieder-, ent- modify meaning predictably, so once you learn the pattern you can guess hundreds of words. glücklich → unglücklich, die Sicht → die Vorsicht, brauchen → missbrauchen. (2) Suffixes like -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -tum, -ling, -er, -in turn verbs and adjectives into nouns and tell you the gender automatically: -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät, -ie are feminine; -tum, -chen, -lein are neuter; -ling, -ismus, -ant, -ent, -or, -er (agent nouns) are masculine. Adjective-forming suffixes: -bar ('-able'), -lich ('-ly / -like'), -isch ('-ish / -ic'), -los ('-less'), -ig ('-y'), -haft ('-ful'). Master ten suffixes and gender becomes a solved problem for thousands of nouns.
Prefix un- — negation
un- negates an adjective or noun. glücklich (happy) → unglücklich (unhappy). möglich (possible) → unmöglich (impossible). wichtig (important) → unwichtig (unimportant). klar (clear) → unklar (unclear). With nouns: das Glück (luck) → das Unglück (misfortune, accident). die Ruhe (calm) → die Unruhe (unrest). The prefix un- is stressed (ÚN-glücklich), unlike most other negation strategies. Don't confuse with the inseparable verb prefix un- of, e.g., a missing form — un- in adjective negation is fully productive: you can attach it to almost any positive adjective and be understood.
Prefixes vor-, nach-, mit-, neben-, gegen-
These give a temporal or spatial frame. vor- = 'before / in advance / fore-'. die Sicht (sight) → die Vorsicht (caution). die Speise (dish) → die Vorspeise (appetizer). bereiten (to prepare) → vorbereiten (to prepare in advance). nach- = 'after / following / re-'. die Speise → die Nachspeise (dessert). denken → nachdenken (to think over). prüfen → nachprüfen (to verify). mit- = 'co-, with'. der Arbeiter → der Mitarbeiter (coworker). das Gefühl → das Mitgefühl (compassion). neben- = 'next to / side-'. der Beruf → der Nebenberuf (side job). gegen- = 'counter-, against-'. die Maßnahme → die Gegenmaßnahme (countermeasure).
Prefixes miss-, wieder-, anti-, ur-
miss- = 'wrongly, mis-, badly'. verstehen → missverstehen (to misunderstand). brauchen → missbrauchen (to misuse / abuse). trauen → misstrauen (to mistrust). The noun forms keep miss-: das Missverständnis (misunderstanding). wieder- = 'again, re-'. sehen → wiedersehen (to see again). holen → wiederholen (to repeat). Don't confuse with wider- (with i, no ie) = 'against', as in widersprechen (to contradict). anti- = international 'anti-' (used productively): anti-demokratisch, antifaschistisch, das Antibiotikum. ur- = 'original, primal, very'. alt → uralt (ancient). die Großmutter → die Urgroßmutter (great-grandmother). der Wald → der Urwald (primeval forest). ur- carries the meaning 'original' or 'extremely'.
Suffixes that build feminine nouns: -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät, -ie
If a noun ends in any of these suffixes, it is feminine — almost without exception. (1) -ung turns verbs into action nouns: bilden → die Bildung (education), erfahren → die Erfahrung (experience), regieren → die Regierung (government), wohnen → die Wohnung (apartment). Hugely productive — you can guess this one almost every time. (2) -heit / -keit turn adjectives into abstract nouns; -keit typically attaches to adjectives ending in -bar, -ig, -lich, -sam: frei → die Freiheit (freedom), gesund → die Gesundheit (health), schön → die Schönheit (beauty); möglich → die Möglichkeit (possibility), freundlich → die Freundlichkeit (friendliness). (3) -schaft = community / state of being. die Freundschaft (friendship), die Mannschaft (team), die Gesellschaft (society), die Wissenschaft (science). (4) -ion, -tät, -ie mark international/Latinate borrowings. die Information, die Universität, die Demokratie. All feminine.
Suffixes that build neuter nouns: -tum, -chen, -lein
-tum = state, condition, abstract domain. das Eigentum (property), das Christentum (Christianity), das Wachstum (growth), das Königtum (kingship). One famous exception: der Reichtum (wealth) and der Irrtum (error) are masculine — these two are the standard exceptions to learn. -chen and -lein are diminutives: they make any noun smaller and always neuter, regardless of the original gender. die Frau → das Frauchen (little lady — but cf. der Mann → das Männchen with umlaut + -chen on the masculine!). das Mädchen (girl, neuter because it's a diminutive of obsolete Magd), das Bisschen (a little bit). das Fräulein (Miss, neuter — diminutive of Frau). Diminutives often add umlaut to the stem vowel: Hund → Hündchen, Buch → Büchlein, Stadt → Städtchen.
Suffixes that build masculine nouns: -ling, -ismus, -ant, -ent, -or, agent -er
-ling = a person characterized by something (often slightly diminutive or pejorative). der Liebling (darling), der Lehrling (apprentice), der Schmetterling (butterfly), der Säugling (infant), der Frühling (spring). -ismus = ideology / system. der Kapitalismus, der Sozialismus, der Optimismus. -ant, -ent, -or = international agent suffixes. der Praktikant (intern), der Student, der Präsident, der Direktor. -er is the all-purpose agent / instrument suffix attached to verbs: lehren → der Lehrer (teacher), fahren → der Fahrer (driver), backen → der Bäcker (baker), öffnen → der Öffner (opener). The female form adds -in: die Lehrerin, die Fahrerin, die Bäckerin — always feminine (so suffix wins again).
Adjective-forming suffixes: -bar, -lich, -isch, -los, -ig, -haft
-bar = '-able', from a verb stem. essen → essbar (edible), lesen → lesbar (legible), machen → machbar (doable), trinken → trinkbar (drinkable). Hugely productive — you can guess this one. -lich = '-ly' or '-like'. freund → freundlich (friendly), glück → glücklich (lucky), monat → monatlich (monthly). -isch = '-ish, -ic, ethnic / language adjective'. deutsch, spanisch, russisch, kindisch (childish). -los = '-less'. die Arbeit → arbeitslos (unemployed), das Ende → endlos (endless), die Hoffnung → hoffnungslos (hopeless). -ig = '-y, -ous'. die Sonne → sonnig (sunny), die Wolke → wolkig (cloudy), das Salz → salzig (salty). -haft = '-ful, -ous, characterized by'. der Zauber → zauberhaft (magical), der Held → heldenhaft (heroic). With these six suffixes you can derive thousands of adjectives from existing nouns and verbs.
Putting it together: predict gender from suffix
When you encounter an unfamiliar German noun, check the ending FIRST. If it ends in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät, -ie, -in → feminine. If it ends in -tum, -chen, -lein → neuter (with the Reichtum, Irrtum exceptions). If it ends in -ling, -ismus, -ant, -ent, -or, -er (agent) → masculine. This rule covers an enormous fraction of German nouns. The remaining cases (mostly short, native, single-syllable nouns: der Tisch, das Buch, die Tür) you have to memorize — but for derived/compound nouns, the suffix is the gender. Example walkthrough: Möglichkeit → ends in -keit → feminine → die Möglichkeit. Lehrling → -ling → masculine → der Lehrling. Mädchen → -chen → neuter → das Mädchen. Universität → -tät → feminine → die Universität. Sozialismus → -ismus → masculine → der Sozialismus.

(1) un- negates adjectives and nouns; stress on the prefix. (2) vor-, nach-, mit-, gegen-, miss-, wieder-, ur- modify meaning in predictable directions. (3) Suffix predicts gender: -ung/-heit/-keit/-schaft/-ion/-tät/-ie/-in → feminine; -tum/-chen/-lein → neuter; -ling/-ismus/-ant/-ent/-or/-er → masculine. (4) -bar, -lich, -isch, -los, -ig, -haft are productive adjective suffixes. (5) When you don't know a word's gender, look at its ending FIRST. Word formation is the secret to German vocabulary.
