Classical Chinese (文言) survivals — what to recognize when you read
Modern Mandarin (白话 báihuà) is grammatically very different from Classical Chinese (文言 wényán), but classical fragments survive everywhere — in chengyu, formal writing, news headlines, contracts, signs at temples, ancient-flavored advertising, and the polished register of educated speech. You don't need to write 文言, but you must RECOGNIZE its fingerprints. The big ones: 之 zhī = classical possessive (≈ modern 的), as in 三分之一 (one third), 总而言之 (in short), 未来之光 (light of the future). 其 qí = his / her / its / their, as in 其中 (among them / inside), 其他 (other / the others), 其实 (in fact). 何 hé = what / how / where, surviving in 如何 (how), 何必 (why must), 何况 (let alone), 任何 (any). 此 cǐ = this, in 此外 (besides / in addition), 从此 (from now on / from then on), 如此 (like this / so). 矣 / 也 / 乎 = sentence-final particles in chengyu and quotations: 不亦乐乎 = isn't it joyful! 由是观之 = looking at it this way. Locatives 之中, 之上, 之下, 之间, 之内, 之外 = among / on / under / between / within / outside. Recognition of these unlocks reading news, contracts, signage, and chengyu.
之 — classical possessive and pronoun
之 is the most common classical survival. Two functions you'll meet: (1) Possessive (= modern 的): 未来之光 = the light of the future, 学习之路 = the road of learning, 成功之母 (in 失败是成功之母 = failure is the mother of success). The 之 sounds elevated / poetic; modern prose uses 的 in everyday contexts. (2) Object pronoun 'it / them' (more strictly classical): rare in modern speech but appears in chengyu — 取而代之 = replace it / take it instead, 置之不理 = set it aside and ignore. (3) The fraction marker 三分之一 = one third (3-parts-of-1), 百分之五十 = 50%. Here 之 functions as a denominator marker. Many compounds: 总而言之 (in short), 久而久之 (over time / as time goes on), 言之有理 (what one says is reasonable), 大同小异 (similar with minor differences — note this one doesn't use 之, just illustrates classical-flavored chengyu). The mental rule: when you see 之 between two nouns or after a number+分, mentally substitute 的 or 'of' to parse meaning.
其 — classical possessive pronoun (his / her / its / their)
其 is the classical 3rd-person possessive — corresponds to modern 他的 / 她的 / 它的 / 他们的. Survives in fixed compounds: 其中 = among them / in the middle of (literally 'in their/its middle'). 学生中,其中三分之一是女生。 = Among the students, one-third are girls. 其他 = other / the others (literally 'their other'). 我有两个,其他都给你了。 = I have two; the others I gave to you. 其实 = in fact / actually (this one drifted to a discourse marker, but origin = 'its truth / its reality'). 其次 = second / next in order. 首先 X,其次 Y。 = First X, next Y. 及其 = and his / her / its / their (formal): 作家及其作品 = the author and his/her works. In writing you'll also see 其 by itself: 这本书很有意思,其内容很丰富。 = This book is interesting; its content is very rich. (Modern equivalent: 它的内容.) Recognize 其 as 'his / her / its / their / them' depending on antecedent. Don't expect to use it freely in speech, but read enough news and 其中 / 其实 / 其他 / 其次 will become second nature.
何 — classical 'what / how / why', surviving in idioms
何 is the classical interrogative — 'what / how / why / where'. In modern Mandarin replaced largely by 什么, 怎么, 为什么, 哪里. But it survives in compounds and rhetorical patterns. 如何 = how / in what way (formal): 此事如何处理? = how should this matter be handled? 如何 is more formal than 怎么. 何必 = why must / no need to (rhetorical): 何必这么生气? = why must (you) be so angry? (= no need). 何况 = let alone / much less: 走路都难,何况跑步? = walking is hard, let alone running. 何时 = when (formal): 何时出发? = when (do we) depart? 何处 = where (formal): 此人何处来? = where does this person come from? 任何 = any: 任何问题 = any question, 任何时候 = any time. 无可奈何 (chengyu) = with nothing to be done about it / helpless. 不知如何是好 = don't know what to do / how to act. 何 + V rhetoricals are common in chengyu and proverbs.
此 — classical 'this'
此 is the classical demonstrative 'this' — modern 这 replaced it. Survives in: 此外 = besides / in addition (literally 'outside this'): 此外,还有别的问题。 = Besides, there are other issues. 从此 = from now on / from then on: 从此他不再来了。 = From then on, he no longer came. 如此 = like this / so / thus: 事情如此严重 = the matter is this serious / so serious. 因此 = therefore (we met in lesson 048 — literally 'because of this'). 此时 = at this moment (formal): 此时此刻 = at this very moment (a fixed phrase). 此地 = this place: 此地不可久留 = this place cannot be lingered (fixed phrase from old novels). 就此 = thereupon / at this point: 会议就此结束。 = The meeting ends thereupon / at this point. Reading temples, museum signs, contracts, you'll meet 此 constantly. The mental substitution: 此 → 这.
Locatives 之中 / 之上 / 之下 / 之间 / 之内 / 之外
Classical-flavored locatives use 之 + position word. They're more elevated / written than the modern equivalents (在...中 / 上 / 下 / 间 / 内 / 外). 之中 = among / amid: 学生之中,他最聪明。 = Among the students, he's the smartest. (Modern: 学生中 is fine too.) 之上 = on top of / above (often abstract): 法律之上 = above the law. 之下 = under / below: 领导之下 = under the leader / leadership. 之间 = between / among: 朋友之间 = between friends, 国家之间 = between countries. (We met 之间 in lesson 047.) 之内 = within: 三天之内 = within three days. 之外 = outside / beyond: 预料之外 = beyond expectations. The pattern: NP + 之 + 中/上/下/间/内/外 (+ Predicate). 三天之内 vs. 三天内 vs. 三天里面 all express 'within three days', but the first is most formal. In contracts and news you'll encounter these constantly. The 之 here is a classical genitive linker; it's invariant — don't confuse with the possessive 之.
矣 / 也 / 乎 — sentence-final classical particles
These three sentence-final particles dominate Classical Chinese but appear in modern Mandarin almost only inside chengyu, quotations from classical works, and very stylized writing. 矣 yǐ = perfective / state-changed marker (≈ modern 了): 足矣 = (it's) enough / suffices. 岁月不待人,时不我与矣 = years don't wait for us, time isn't with us anymore. 也 yě = (classical, NOT the modern 'also') topic-comment marker / equational copula in classical: 此乃天意也 = this is heaven's will. 学而时习之,不亦说乎 (Confucius) = to learn and practice it timely, isn't it pleasing? — the famous opening of the Analects. 乎 hū = question / exclamation marker: 不亦乐乎 = isn't it joyful! (chengyu meaning 'tremendously / to an extreme degree'). 君子乎? = (is one) a gentleman? You won't write these, but recognize them in chengyu: 不亦乐乎, 之乎者也 ('zhī hū zhě yě' — a stock phrase mocking pedantic classical-style speech), 由是观之 (looking at it from this perspective — has 之 as object pronoun). When you see 矣/也/乎 sentence-finally outside a quoted line, the writer is probably striking a deliberately archaic tone.
Reading practice — spotting 文言 in news and signs
Newspaper headline: 据报道,关于此事,有关部门将进一步调查,其结果不日公布。 = According to reports, regarding this matter, the relevant departments will further investigate; the results will be published in the coming days. Note: 此事 (this matter), 其结果 (its results), 不日 (in the coming days, classical) — three classical fragments in one short sentence. Temple inscription: 此地千年之前,即为佛教圣地。 = This place, a thousand years ago, was already a Buddhist holy land. Note: 此地 (this place), 千年之前 (a thousand years ago), 即为 (was, classical copula 即为). Contract clause: 甲方应于三十日之内付款,逾期则按合同处理。 = Party A shall pay within thirty days; if overdue, then it will be handled according to the contract. Note: 应 (shall), 三十日之内 (within 30 days), 逾期则 (if overdue, then; 则 is classical conditional connector). Each domain — news, signs, contracts — has its own concentration of classical fragments. The skill is mentally substituting modern equivalents: 此 → 这, 其 → 它的 / 他们的, 之 → 的, 则 → 就, 应 → 要 / 应该, 及 → 和. Once you can do this on the fly, formal Chinese becomes readable.
Common patterns and traps
Trap 1: trying to USE 之 / 其 / 此 freely in speech. Don't. They sound bizarre in casual conversation. Confine your active use to fixed compounds (其实, 因此, 任何, 总之, 三分之一) and recognition only for the rest. Trap 2: confusing classical 也 with modern 也. 此乃天意也 (classical: 'this is heaven's will') ≠ 我也去 (modern: 'I'm going too'). The classical 也 is a topic-comment / copula particle; modern 也 is the adverb 'also'. Same character, different functions, totally different positions in the sentence. Trap 3: misreading 之 as 'go to'. Classical 之 as a verb means 'go to' (之 + 地点 = go to a place), as in 不知所之 (don't know where to go). Rare in modern reading; usually it's the possessive. Trap 4: missing 其 antecedents. 公司及其员工 = the company and its employees. The 其 needs an antecedent to refer back to (公司 here). When reading, identify the antecedent. Trap 5: assuming 即 (jí) means 'immediately'. In classical and formal Chinese, 即 = is / means / equals (此即所谓 X = this is what's called X). The 'immediately' meaning is in 立即 lìjí (= at once). Trap 6: 则 (zé) is the classical 'then / namely', NOT the modern 'principle'. 如有问题,则联系我们 = if there's a problem, then contact us. Modern equivalent: 就. Trap 7: thinking you have to memorize Classical Chinese. You don't — recognition is enough. Read the news with substitutions in mind, and over a few months these fragments become transparent.
