Compound directionals — and what they mean when nobody's actually moving
Lesson 18 introduced 来 / 去 and the six direction roots 进 / 出 / 上 / 下 / 回 / 过. This lesson does two things: (1) it nails down compound directionals like 进来, 出去, 上去, 下来, 起来, 过去, 回来 glued onto a main verb (走进来, 跑出去, 拿出来); (2) it covers the FIGURATIVE meanings that are everywhere in real Mandarin. 想起来 = to recall (the memory comes UP). 看出来 = to figure out / make out (the realization comes OUT). 听起来 = to sound like (the impression comes UP). These figurative uses don't translate by direction at all — you have to learn them as units.
Quick refresher — the building blocks
Direction roots: 进 (enter), 出 (exit), 上 (up), 下 (down), 回 (back), 过 (cross), and the special 起 (rise — only forms 起来, no 起去). Perspective: 来 (toward speaker), 去 (away from speaker). Compounds: 进来 / 进去, 出来 / 出去, 上来 / 上去, 下来 / 下去, 回来 / 回去, 过来 / 过去, 起来 (rise up — toward speaker only). Glued onto a main verb: 走进来 (walk in, toward me), 跑出去 (run out, away from me), 跳下来 (jump down, here), 搬上去 (carry up, away).
Where the object goes — between the direction and 来/去
When a verb+directional compound has an object (especially a place), the standard pattern slots the object BETWEEN the direction and 来/去. 他走进房间来。 = He walked into the room (here). 她跑出学校去。 = She ran out of the school. With non-place objects (a thing being moved), the same slotting works: 拿出一本书来 = take out a book (and bring it here). In casual modern speech, the whole compound is also OK at the front: 他走进来了房间 is heard, but the textbook split is still the safest. With 了, completed action: 他走进房间来了。 了 sits at the very end.
起来 — the all-purpose 'up'
起来 is the workhorse compound. Literally 'rise + come'. Three layers of meaning: (1) Literal physical rise: 站起来 = stand up. 坐起来 = sit up. 拿起来 = pick up. (2) Inception — the action STARTS: 笑起来 = burst out laughing. 哭起来 = start crying. 下起雨来 = it started raining (note the object 雨 slots inside: 下 + 起 + 雨 + 来). (3) Impression / re-evaluation — when X is taken in: 听起来不错 = sounds good. 看起来很累 = looks tired. 吃起来很甜 = tastes sweet (when eaten). The third layer is the trickiest for English speakers — it's how Mandarin builds 'sounds / looks / tastes / feels like' for impressions.
起来 figurative: 想起来 — recall
想起来 = remember / recall (a memory rises into mind). Distinct from plain 想 (think / want) and from 记得 (remember as a state). 我想起来了! = I remember now! / It just came back to me. 我想不起来他的名字。 = I can't recall his name. The negative potential 想不起来 is one of the most useful conversational phrases — use it when a name or fact won't surface. Compare: 记得 = have it in memory (state). 想起来 = the memory just arrived NOW (event). 'Do you remember him?' = 你记得他吗? vs. 'Did you just recall it?' = 你想起来了吗?
出来 figurative: 看出来 — figure out / recognize
出来 literally = come out. Figuratively, with sense and cognition verbs, it means the realization / recognition emerged. 看出来 = figure out / recognize (by looking). 我看出来你不高兴。 = I can tell you're unhappy. 听出来 = make out / recognize (by listening). 我听出来是他的声音。 = I can tell it's his voice. 想出来 = think up / come up with: 我想出来一个办法。 = I came up with a plan. The pattern: V + 出来 = the result of the V emerged into awareness. Negative potential: 看不出来 = can't tell. 听不出来 = can't make out. These are extremely common.
下来, 下去, 过来, 过去 — figurative aspects
下来 can mean 'come down to here', but figuratively = settle / continue from past to now: 写下来 = write down (capture it). 记下来 = jot it down. 坚持下来 = stick it out (continued from past). 下去 = continue from now into the future: 说下去 = keep talking. 听下去 = keep listening. 活下去 = keep living. So 下来 vs. 下去 with a verb of activity = continue-up-to-now vs. continue-into-the-future. 过来 can mean 'come over here' literally but figuratively = recover / come around: 醒过来 = wake up / come to. 过去 literally = go over; figuratively = pass / die down: 晕过去 = faint. 不好意思,我没想过来。 = Sorry, I wasn't thinking straight. The figurative network is wide — pick up the high-frequency ones (想起来, 看出来, 听起来, 写下来, 说下去) first.
