Números grandes y ordinales
Earlier you learned numbers up to 100 and the everyday ordinals (first–fifth). Today: big numbers and the full ordinal table, plus a few quirks: how dates are written, which numbers change for gender, and why '1,000,000' takes de.
Hundreds — change for gender
100 = cien (exactly), but from 101 — ciento. ciento un libro, ciento una casa. 200 = doscientos / doscientas. 300 = trescientos. 400 = cuatrocientos. 500 = QUINIENTOS (special!). 600 = seiscientos. 700 = SETECIENTOS. 800 = ochocientos. 900 = NOVECIENTOS. They all change -os/-as to match the noun: doscientos libros / doscientas casas. Memorize three exceptions: 500 quinientos, 700 setecientos, 900 novecientos.
Thousands and millions
1000 = mil. 2000 = dos mil (mil doesn't change). 100,000 = cien mil. 1,000,000 = un millón. With a noun, millón requires de: un millón de euros, tres millones de personas. mil — no de: mil personas, dos mil libros. miles de = thousands of: miles de personas.
Years and dates
Years are read in FULL, not in pairs like English ('nineteen eighty-five'). 1985 = mil novecientos ochenta y cinco. 2024 = dos mil veinticuatro. Nací en mil novecientos noventa (I was born in '90). Dates use cardinal numbers (not ordinals, except first): el dos de mayo, el quince de octubre. Only the first is special — el primero de enero (Latin America) or el uno de enero (Spain).
Ordinals 1-10
primero (1st), segundo (2nd), tercero (3rd), cuarto (4th), quinto (5th), sexto (6th), séptimo (7th), octavo (8th), noveno (9th), décimo (10th). They change for gender: primera, segunda, tercera… la primera lección, el primer día. IMPORTANT: primero and tercero drop the final -o before a masculine singular noun → primer, tercer: el primer libro, el tercer día (but la primera casa, la tercera vez).
Ordinals beyond 10
Past 10, ordinals are rarely used — speakers just use the cardinal number. el siglo XXI is read el siglo veintiuno (not el siglo vigésimo primero, though that's technically correct). el piso quince (the 15th floor) instead of décimoquinto. So you don't need to be a pedant.
Fractions and percentages
la mitad = half. la mitad de los estudiantes = half of the students. un tercio = a third. un cuarto = a quarter. dos tercios = two thirds. el cincuenta por ciento = 50%. el veinte por ciento de la gente = 20% of the people. el doble = double. el triple = triple.
