Estar + gerundio (continuous)

I'm doing it right now — the continuous form.

When you want to stress that something is happening RIGHT NOW, in this moment, Spanish has a separate construction: estar + gerund. Same idea as English 'I am eating'. You can survive without it (the simple present can mean 'now' too in Spanish), but with it your speech feels much more alive.

Forming the gerund

From -ar verbs: stem + -ando. hablarhablando. trabajartrabajando. From -er and -ir: stem + -iendo. comercomiendo. vivirviviendo. A few irregulars: leerleyendo (i→y between vowels). dormirdurmiendo (o→u). pedirpidiendo (e→i). decirdiciendo. iryendo (with y).

The estar + gerundio construction

Take estar in any tense and add the gerund. Estoy hablando = I'm speaking (right now). Estamos comiendo = we're eating. Está lloviendo = it's raining. Estaba leyendo cuando llamó = I was reading when he called. Estará durmiendo = he must be sleeping.

When to use it

1) Action at the moment of speaking: ¿Qué estás haciendo? (what are you doing?). 2) Description of an ongoing (often temporary) state: Estoy estudiando para un examen (I'm studying for an exam). 3) Background contrast (in the past): Estaba durmiendo cuando llegó (I was sleeping when he arrived — ongoing action when something happens). 4) Annoyance / persistent action: Siempre estás quejándote (you're always complaining!).

When NOT to use it

With state verbs (ser, tener, parecer, gustar) — usually NOT estoy teniendo, estoy gustando. Use the simple present instead. Also for the future: Spanish rarely uses estar + gerundio for the future ('tomorrow I'll be working' = mañana voy a trabajar or trabajaré, not estaré trabajando).

Pronouns and the gerund

Object pronouns can go either BEFORE estar or ATTACHED to the gerund (with an accent mark). Lo estoy comiendo = Estoy comiéndolo. Te estaba esperando = Estaba esperándote. Both are correct.

The 'keep + gerund' family

Bonus: you can swap estar for other verbs to add nuance. seguir + gerundio = to keep doing. Sigo estudiando = I'm still studying. ir + gerundio = to be gradually doing. Voy aprendiendo poco a poco = I'm learning little by little. llevar + time + gerundio = to have been doing for some time. Llevo dos años estudiando español = I've been studying Spanish for two years.
