Conjugating -ER and -IR verbs

The other two groups — almost like -ar.

After -ar there are two more verb groups: -er (comer, beber, leer, vender) and -ir (vivir, escribir, abrir). Their endings are almost identical — they only differ in the nosotros and vosotros forms.

The -ER group

Take comer (to eat). Stem: com-. Endings: yo como, tú comes, él/ella/usted come, nosotros comemos, vosotros coméis, ellos/ellas/ustedes comen. Rhythm: o, es, e, emos, éis, en.

The -IR group

Take vivir (to live). Stem: viv-. Endings: yo vivo, tú vives, él/ella/usted vive, nosotros vivimos, vosotros vivís, ellos/ellas/ustedes viven. Rhythm: o, es, e, imos, ís, en.

Where -ER and -IR overlap (and don't)

All forms are identical except nosotros (-emos / -imos) and vosotros (-éis / -ís). Once you know -er, adding -ir is almost free.

Several verbs at once

leer (to read) → leo, lees, lee, leemos, leéis, leen. beber (to drink) → bebo, bebes, bebe, bebemos, bebéis, beben. escribir (to write) → escribo, escribes, escribe, escribimos, escribís, escriben. abrir (to open) → abro, abres, abre, abrimos, abrís, abren.

All three groups side by side

yo: hablo (-ar), como (-er), vivo (-ir). : hablas, comes, vives. él: habla, come, vive. nosotros: hablamos, comemos, vivimos. vosotros: habláis, coméis, vivís. ellos: hablan, comen, viven. Notice: yo, , él, ellos are perfectly aligned across all three groups; only nosotros and vosotros differ.
