Big numbers and ordinals
Russian counts past 100 transparently — combine the hundreds, tens, and units. Ordinal numbers (first, second, third…) are adjectives that decline like normal adjectives.
Hundreds
- 100 сто - 200 двести - 300 триста - 400 четыреста - 500 пятьсот - 600 шестьсот - 700 семьсот - 800 восемьсот - 900 девятьсот Note the irregular feel: двести (not двасто), пятьсот (literally 'five hundred').
Thousands
- 1000 тысяча - 2 000 две тысячи - 5 000 пять тысяч - 1 000 000 миллион Тысяча is a noun — it follows the case rules of any feminine noun, and the number before it triggers case (две тысячи is genitive sg, пять тысяч is genitive pl).
Combining
Just say the parts in order: - 125 → сто двадцать пять - 543 → пятьсот сорок три - 1 200 → тысяча двести (or одна тысяча двести) - 2 025 → две тысячи двадцать пять The noun being counted follows the LAST element's case rule (e.g. 25 books → двадцать пять книг — gen. pl. because 5 ends it).
Ordinal numbers
Ordinals are adjectives — they decline normally and agree with their noun: - первый (1st), второй (2nd), третий (3rd, irregular!), четвёртый (4th), пятый (5th), шестой (6th), седьмой (7th), восьмой (8th), девятый (9th), десятый (10th). - двадцатый (20th), сотый (100th), тысячный (1000th). For compound ordinals, only the LAST element is ordinal: '21st' = двадцать первый (twenty + 1st-as-adjective).
