The full adjective case table
When the noun changes case, the adjective changes with it. The endings follow a small set of patterns. Once you've seen them a few times, you'll predict them.
Masculine and neuter share most endings
Masculine and neuter adjectives have identical forms in the genitive, dative, instrumental, and prepositional. They differ only in the nominative and accusative. - Nominative: новый стол / новое окно - Genitive: нового стола / нового окна - Dative: новому столу / новому окну - Instrumental: новым столом / новым окном - Prepositional: о новом столе / о новом окне
Feminine — one set of endings
- Nominative: новая книга - Accusative: новую книгу - Genitive: новой книги - Dative: новой книге - Instrumental: новой книгой - Prepositional: о новой книге The genitive, dative, instrumental, and prepositional all use -ой / -ей.
Plural — one set
- Nominative: новые столы - Accusative (inanimate): новые столы / (animate): новых студентов - Genitive: новых столов - Dative: новым столам - Instrumental: новыми столами - Prepositional: о новых столах
Soft-stem adjectives (синий)
Same patterns but with soft vowels: - Nom: синий, синяя, синее, синие - Gen (m/n): синего; (f): синей; (pl): синих - The same -его / -ей / -их structure as new — just with 'и' where the hard pattern has 'ы' or 'о'.
