-(으)면서 (simultaneous) and -자마자 (immediate sequence)

Two actions at once, or one immediately after the other.

Two related but distinct connectors. -(으)면서 = 'while / as'. Both actions overlap in time, performed by the same subject. Form: vowel-stem + 면서, consonant-stem + 으면서. 노래하면서 청소해요 = 'I clean while singing.' -자마자 = 'as soon as / immediately upon'. The second action follows right after the first, no overlap. Form: stem + 자마자, no vowel/consonant variation. 일어나자마자 커피를 마셔요 = 'As soon as I wake up, I drink coffee.' Both attach directly to the verb stem (no tense marker on the connector itself — final tense lives on the main clause). Korean speakers reach for these constantly to chain everyday routines.

-(으)면서 — simultaneous actions

Vowel-final stem + -면서: 가다가면서 ('while going'), 마시다마시면서 ('while drinking'), 공부하다공부하면서 ('while studying'). Consonant-final + -으면서: 먹다먹으면서 ('while eating'), 읽다읽으면서 ('while reading'). ㄹ-final stems drop before -면서 is unnecessary — they keep ㄹ and just take -면서: 만들다만들면서 ('while making'). The same subject does both actions: 음악을 들으면서 운동해요 = 'I listen to music while exercising.' If the subjects differ, you need a different connector (e.g., -는 동안에 'during the time when'). With adjectives, -(으)면서 can mean 'and at the same time / both X and Y': 예쁘면서 똑똑해요 = 'She's pretty AND smart.'

-자마자 — as soon as

Just attach -자마자 to the stem, regardless of vowel/consonant: 일어나다일어나자마자, 먹다먹자마자, 도착하다도착하자마자. 집에 도착하자마자 잠들었어요 = 'I fell asleep as soon as I got home.' 수업이 끝나자마자 친구를 만났어요 = 'As soon as class ended, I met a friend.' The first action fully completes, then the second happens immediately. Subjects can be the same or different: 비가 오자마자 우리는 집에 들어갔어요 = 'As soon as it started raining, we went into the house.' Don't add a past-tense marker to the -자마자 clause; the tense of the whole sentence is set by the main verb.

Choosing between them

Overlap vs. sequence. -(으)면서 = both at the same time, -자마자 = one right after the other. Compare: 밥을 먹으면서 TV를 봤어요 = 'I watched TV while eating' (both at once). 밥을 먹자마자 TV를 봤어요 = 'I watched TV right after eating' (sequence). Confusion test: if the actions logically can't happen at the same time (e.g., 'arrive' and 'sit down'), use -자마자. If both are continuous activities you could do together (e.g., 'walk' and 'talk'), use -(으)면서. Combining: 공부하면서 음악을 들었지만, 끝나자마자 잤어요 = 'I listened to music while studying, but as soon as I finished, I slept.'

Same-subject rule for -(으)면서

-(으)면서 strictly requires the same subject for both actions. 저는 노래를 부르면서 청소해요 = 'I clean while singing' (both ). 민지가 노래를 부르면서 수민이 청소해요 is awkward / wrong (different subjects). For different-subject simultaneity, use -는 동안에 ('during the time that') or just chain sentences. -자마자 has no such restriction: 민지가 도착하자마자 수민이 출발했어요 = 'As soon as Minji arrived, Sumin left.' This subject flexibility is one big reason -자마자 sees more variety in real conversation.

Special readings

-(으)면서 can carry a 'though / despite' tone when the two states clash: 돈이 많으면서 안 써요 = 'He has a lot of money but doesn't spend it.' Context tells you whether it's neutral 'while' or sarcastic 'though'. -자마자 is occasionally written -자 alone in literary or older Korean, but at B1, stick with -자마자. Avoid -자마자 for very long delays: 'I called him as soon as I got the time' is fine; 'I called him as soon as I retired (years later)' is wrong — you'd want 나서 or another sequencer. The 'as soon as' has to feel immediate.

Common pairings

-(으)면서 classics: 걸으면서 이야기해요 ('chat while walking'), 먹으면서 봐요 ('watch while eating'), 운전하면서 전화하지 마세요 ('don't talk on the phone while driving'). -자마자 classics: 일어나자마자 ('as soon as I wake up'), 집에 가자마자 ('as soon as I get home'), 수업이 끝나자마자 ('as soon as class ends'), 도착하자마자 ('as soon as I arrive'). These chunks are worth memorizing whole — they cover most everyday usage.
