-게 되다 / -게 하다
Both forms attach -게 to a verb stem. -게 되다 = 'come to' / 'end up' / 'turn out to' — circumstances bring about the result, no one in particular caused it. -게 하다 = 'make / let someone do' — a causative, where someone deliberately brings the action about. Same -게, two opposite directions: things happen TO me (-게 되다) vs I cause things to happen (-게 하다).
-게 되다 — 'come to / end up'
Form: stem + -게 되다. Polite: -게 돼요. Past (most common): -게 됐어요. 알다 (know) → 알게 되다 = 'come to know / find out'. 알게 됐어요 = 'I came to know / I found out.' 만나다 → 만나게 됐어요 = 'I ended up meeting / it happened that I met'. 사랑하게 됐어요 = 'I came to love (you).' The feel is: 'circumstances led to this'; you didn't fully plan it. Often used to soften news that might otherwise sound boastful or abrupt: 결혼하게 됐어요 = 'I'm getting married (it turned out that way)' is gentler than 결혼할 거예요.
-게 되다 with adjectives — 'become'
Same form, with an adjective stem, gives 'become (more) ___'. 예쁘다 → 예쁘게 되다 = 'become pretty'. 건강하게 되다 = 'become healthy'. (For adjectives, -아/어지다 is also common and often more natural: 예뻐지다 / 건강해지다. We touch on -아/어지다 in lesson 33.) With change-of-state situations both forms are interchangeable; with circumstantial 'turn out' meanings, -게 되다 is the choice.
-게 하다 — causative 'make / let do'
Form: stem + -게 하다. Polite: -게 해요. Past: -게 했어요. 가다 → 가게 하다 = 'make / let (someone) go'. 엄마가 동생을 가게 했어요. = 'Mom made / let little brother go.' 웃다 → 웃게 하다 = 'make laugh'. 그 영화가 저를 웃게 했어요. = 'That movie made me laugh.' The doer of the original verb is marked with -을/를 or -에게: 저를 가게 했어요 (made me go), 저에게 가게 했어요 (let me go) — both common.
Make vs let — context decides
-게 하다 doesn't distinguish 'make' (force) from 'let' (allow) on its own — context fills in. 부모님이 저를 늦게 자게 했어요. = 'My parents made / let me sleep late.' (Probably 'let' if late = staying up.) For an explicit 'let / allow' nuance, Korean often uses -게 해 주다 ('do the favor of letting do'): 늦게 자게 해 줬어요 = 'they let me stay up late' (favor). Force tends to be expressed by stronger verbs (시키다) or context; -게 하다 is the neutral causative that works for both.
Quick contrast
알다 = know. 알게 됐어요 = 'I came to know' (circumstances brought it). 알게 했어요 = 'I made / let (someone) know' (I brought it about). Same root, opposite roles: in -게 되다 the subject is the receiver of the change; in -게 하다 the subject is the cause. 그 일이 저를 슬프게 했어요. = 'That matter made me sad.' 저는 슬프게 됐어요. = 'I came to feel sad.' Both true, very different mood.
