〜たところで, 〜たとたん(に), 〜次第 — moment-of-action grammar
Three more grammar tools that turn on a moment in time. 〜た ところで = even if you do X, the result won't change ('no point in ~ing'). 〜た とたん(に) = the very instant X happened, Y also happened (often surprising). 〜次第 = as soon as X is done (formal, business). All three pin the action on a precise moment, but they go in different directions: ところで dismisses the action as futile, とたん dramatizes simultaneity, 次第 schedules a follow-up. ところで has a separate, unrelated meaning as a conversation-changer ('by the way') — don't confuse the two.
〜た ところで — futile concession ('even if I did, it wouldn't matter')
〜た ところで says: even if X were/had been done, it wouldn't change anything. The action is dismissed as pointless. English: 'even if ~', 'no use ~ing', 'doing ~ won't change anything'. Built on た-form (past plain) of the verb, even though the meaning isn't past. 今 から 走った ところで、まにあわない。 = 'Even if I run from now, I won't make it.' 謝った ところで、ゆるして くれない だろう。 = 'Even if I apologized, he probably wouldn't forgive me.' いくら 考えた ところで、こたえ は 出ない。 = 'No matter how much I think, the answer won't come.' Often paired with いくら ~ ('no matter how much ~') and a negative or pessimistic main clause. Pitfall: also exists as 〜ところ で ('the place where', or as a topic shifter 'by the way'). The futile-concession version is always た-form + ところで with no comma; the topic-shifter is sentence-initial: ところで、お元気 です か。 = 'By the way, how are you?'
〜た とたん(に) — 'the very moment ~'
〜た とたん(に) says: the instant X happened, Y also happened — usually unexpectedly. English: 'the moment ~', 'as soon as ~ (suddenly)', 'just as ~'. Built on た-form + とたん(に) (the に is optional). ドア を 開けた とたん、ねこ が 走り出した。 = 'The instant I opened the door, the cat ran out.' 電気 を けした とたん に、電話 が 鳴った。 = 'The moment I turned off the lights, the phone rang.' すわった とたん、つかれ が どっと 出た。 = 'The moment I sat down, the tiredness hit me.' Two notes: (1) the second event is outside the speaker's control — とたん is for surprising or involuntary outcomes, not planned next steps. Don't say 家 に 着いた とたん、シャワー を あびた ('the moment I got home, I took a shower') — that's just sequencing, use 〜たら or 〜と instead. (2) とたん sounds dramatic; 〜と どうじ に ('at the same time as ~') is a calmer alternative for simultaneity.
〜次第 — 'as soon as ~' (formal)
〜次第 is a formal 'as soon as'. It tags onto the stem (連用形) of a verb: 着く → 着き 次第, わかる → わかり 次第, おわる → おわり 次第. Common in business / written contexts. 会議 が おわり 次第、ご れんらく いたします。 = 'As soon as the meeting ends, I will contact you.' 電車 が 来 次第、出発 します。 = 'We will depart as soon as the train arrives.' じゅんび が でき 次第、はじめます。 = 'We will start as soon as preparations are done.' Two important constraints: (1) the main clause must describe a planned, willed action (します, いたします, はじめます) — not a passive event. 電車 が 来た とたん、急に 雨 が ふって きた ('the moment the train came, it suddenly rained') wouldn't work with 次第 because rain isn't planned. (2) The construction is future-oriented: it describes intent, not narration of past events. For past, use 〜たら すぐ or 〜とすぐ. 次第 has a separate noun meaning ('depending on / according to'): あなた 次第 です = 'it's up to you'. Same character, related but distinct usage.
Side-by-side comparison
Same general territory, three different lenses. Take 'the meeting ends': (1) 会議 が おわった ところで、何も 変わらない = 'Even if the meeting ends, nothing will change.' (futile). (2) 会議 が おわった とたん、みんな 立ち上がった = 'The instant the meeting ended, everyone stood up.' (involuntary simultaneity). (3) 会議 が おわり 次第、ご れんらく します = 'As soon as the meeting ends, I'll contact you.' (planned, formal). Each pins on the moment, but ところで dismisses, とたん dramatizes, 次第 schedules. Casual alternatives: 〜たら すぐ ('as soon as ~') is the everyday counterpart to 次第. 〜と is the everyday counterpart to とたん for sequencing. 〜て も ('even if ~') is broader than た ところで and works in non-futile contexts.
Common pitfalls
(1) た ところで vs ところで (topic shifter) — same string, different placement and tone. The topic shifter starts a sentence and is followed by a comma. (2) とたん demands a surprising / involuntary Y. For ordinary sequencing, use 〜と or 〜たら. (3) 次第 demands a willed future action in the main clause. (4) 次第 is formal; in casual speech, just say 〜たら すぐ. (5) Don't confuse 〜次第 ('as soon as') with 〜次第 だ ('depending on'): 天気 次第 だ = 'it depends on the weather'. 天気 が 良く なり 次第、出発 する = 'we'll leave as soon as the weather gets better'. Same character, totally different syntax.
