Konjunktiv II in full — present, past, and modal
Lesson 24 introduced Konjunktiv II for everyday politeness (Könnten Sie?, Hätten Sie?, Ich möchte). This lesson upgrades it to the full B2 system. Three big additions: (1) wishes with wenn … nur or bloß + Konjunktiv II — Wenn ich nur mehr Zeit hätte! (2) Konjunktiv II der Vergangenheit for past hypotheticals: hätte/wäre + Partizip II. Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich gekommen. = If I had known that, I would have come. (3) modal Konjunktiv II (könnte, sollte, müsste, dürfte) for speculation and softened advice. Das könnte stimmen. = That could be true. Du solltest das nicht tun. = You shouldn't do that. The whole system covers polite requests, regret, advice, and speculation — everything you can't say in plain indicative.
Quick refresher — present Konjunktiv II
Three pillars from L24: würde + Infinitiv for almost any verb, wäre for sein, hätte for haben. Ich würde gerne kommen. Das wäre toll. Ich hätte eine Frage. Modals avoid würde and use their own forms with umlaut: könnte, möchte, müsste, dürfte, sollte. Strong verbs sometimes have a one-word Konjunktiv II (käme, ginge, gäbe, fände), still alive in writing — but in speech, würde + Infinitiv is the safe default. Word order is normal V2; in subordinate wenn-clauses the verb goes to the end.
Wishes — wenn … nur / bloß + Konjunktiv II
German expresses regret or longing with a wenn-clause that has no main clause — just the wish hanging in the air. Add nur or bloß ('only / just') for the wishful tone. Wenn ich nur mehr Zeit hätte! = If only I had more time! Wenn er bloß hier wäre! = If only he were here! Without the wenn, German uses the subjunctive verb in position 1: Hätte ich nur mehr Zeit! = Had I only more time! Both sound idiomatic. The exclamation mark is doing real work — these are emotional, not neutral statements.
Konjunktiv II der Vergangenheit — past hypotheticals
To say 'would have done' or 'if I had done', German builds it like Perfekt but with hätte or wäre as the helper instead of habe / bin. Pattern: hätte / wäre + Partizip II, sent to the end. Choose hätte for verbs that take haben in Perfekt; wäre for verbs that take sein (motion, change of state, sein/bleiben). Ich hätte das nicht gesagt. = I wouldn't have said that. Wir wären früher gekommen. = We would have come earlier. Wenn du angerufen hättest, wäre ich gekommen. = If you had called, I would have come. Past Konjunktiv II is the form for regret about the past, counterfactual ('if only X had happened'), and polite past assumption ('he would have known').
Modal Konjunktiv II in the past — double infinitive
Modal verbs in past Konjunktiv II keep the famous double-infinitive trick from L23 Perfekt: hätte + verb infinitive + modal infinitive. Ich hätte das machen können. = I could have done that. Du hättest mich anrufen sollen. = You should have called me. Sie hätte gehen müssen. = She would have had to go. Wir hätten kommen dürfen. = We would have been allowed to come. The hätte stays in normal V2 position; the two infinitives go to the end with the modal LAST. In subordinate clauses, hätte moves all the way to the front of that final cluster: …, weil ich das hätte machen können.
Modal Konjunktiv II for speculation
könnte, müsste, dürfte, sollte in present Konjunktiv II make assumptions sound careful. Das könnte stimmen. = That could be true. Er müsste schon zu Hause sein. = He should already be home (logical deduction). Sie dürfte um die dreißig sein. = She'd be around thirty (educated guess). dürfte is especially nice — it expresses 'a careful estimate'. Es dürfte morgen regnen. = It'll probably rain tomorrow. None of these mean 'permission' or 'obligation' here — they're hedges. English equivalents: 'could, should, must (deduction), might'.
sollte — should / ought to
sollte = Konjunktiv II of sollen, the workhorse for advice. Du solltest mehr schlafen. = You should sleep more. Wir sollten uns beeilen. = We should hurry. Note: sollte is the polite suggestion. Plain musst ('have to') is much harsher. In the past — hätte … sollen for 'should have done': Ich hätte das wissen sollen. = I should have known that. This is one of the most useful B2 forms because it's how you express regret about your own actions: Du hättest etwas sagen sollen. = You should have said something.
Conditional sentences — three types
Sorting them out: (1) real conditional with indicative — Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause. = If it rains, I stay home. (2) present unreal — Konjunktiv II in both clauses. Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. (3) past unreal — past Konjunktiv II in both clauses. Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre ich gekommen. = If I'd had time, I would have come. You can also mix: Wenn ich damals besser aufgepasst hätte, wäre alles jetzt einfacher. = If I had paid more attention back then, everything would be easier now. The wenn-clause is verb-final, the main clause is verb-second.
Polite requests — softer than ever
Use könnte / würde / hätte to dial up politeness. Könnten Sie mir sagen, wo der Bahnhof ist? = Could you tell me where the train station is? Ich hätte gerne die Rechnung. = I'd like the bill. Würden Sie mir bitte einen Gefallen tun? = Would you do me a favor? Add vielleicht ('perhaps') for extra hedging: Könnten Sie mir vielleicht helfen? = Could you perhaps help me? German politeness lives in this register; native speakers sound abrupt to themselves if they skip it in formal contexts.
