Spoken-Chinese discourse markers — what they signal and how to use them

The little words that lubricate spoken Chinese — turn-taking, hedging, transitioning, summarizing. The difference between textbook Chinese and natural conversation.

Real conversation isn't a stack of grammatical sentences — it's full of transition words, fillers, and pragmatic markers that signal how clauses relate, how confident the speaker is, and where the floor is in turn-taking. Mandarin's most common: = 'so / well, then' (transitions to a next topic or consequence). 然后 ránhòu = 'and then' (sequential connector). èn = 'mm / yeah' (acknowledgment, thinking sound). 那么 nàme = 'so / in that case' (slightly more formal than 那). 反正 fǎnzhèng = 'anyway / in any case' (dismissive / summary). 总之 zǒngzhī = 'in short / to sum up'. 其实 qíshí = 'actually / in fact' (introducing a contrast or reveal). 当然 dāngrán = 'of course'. 不过 búguò = 'but / however' (softer than 但是). 你知道吗 nǐ zhīdào ma = 'you know?' (engagement marker). Mastering these is what turns textbook fluency into natural fluency.

那 — 'so / well then' (transition / consequence)

is one of the most common discourse markers in spoken Chinese. It signals 'given that, then...' — a transition from what was just established to a next move or topic. = 'well then / in that case / so'. A: 我没空。 B: 那明天呢? = A: I'm busy. B: Well, how about tomorrow? 那我们走吧。 = So let's go (then). 那你怎么想? = So what do you think? It's the conversational pivot — moves the conversation forward based on what was just said. is shorter / more casual than 那么, which has the same function but feels slightly more careful or formal. Don't confuse this discourse 那 with the demonstrative 那 ('that'); context disambiguates. The discourse 那 typically opens a clause: 那, 我们... = 'So, we...'.

然后 — 'and then' (sequence)

然后 sequences events: A happened, 然后 B happened. 我先吃饭,然后看电视。 = First I eat, then I watch TV. 他来了,然后我们一起走。 = He came, and then we left together. In casual speech, native speakers — especially younger ones — sprinkle 然后 liberally as a filler / sequencer, almost like English 'and then... and then...'. 他说... 然后我说... 然后他就走了。 = He said... then I said... then he left. Be aware: heavy reliance on 然后 in narration is a teenage / casual register; in formal writing, vary it with 接着 (following), 后来 (afterward), 于是 (thereupon). But in conversation, 然后 is fine and ubiquitous.

嗯 / 那么 / 反正 — acknowledgment, transition, dismissal

èn is the all-purpose 'mm / yeah / uh-huh' — backchanneling that signals you're listening or agreeing without committing strongly. A: 你明白吗? B: 嗯。 = A: You understand? B: Mm-hm. Also used as a thinking sound (嗯…我想想… = 'Hmm... let me think...'). 那么 is the slightly more deliberate cousin of 那 — same function (transition / 'so / in that case') but a half-step more formal. 那么,我们开始吧。 = So, let's begin. Often in lectures or formal openings. 反正 fǎnzhèng = 'anyway / in any case' — used to dismiss what was just said and assert a conclusion that holds regardless. 反正我不去。 = Anyway, I'm not going. 不管下不下雨,反正我们都要走。 = Whether or not it rains, anyway we have to go. 反正 has a slightly resigned / take-it-or-leave-it flavor. Often comes mid-conversation when the speaker wants to cut through the back-and-forth.

其实 / 当然 — actually / of course

其实 qíshí = 'actually / in fact'. Introduces a contrast or a behind-the-scenes reveal. 你以为他不会中文?其实他说得很好。 = You think he doesn't speak Chinese? Actually, he speaks very well. 其实我也不知道。 = Actually, I don't know either. 其实 is a softener — it lets you correct a perception or admit something gently, without contradicting bluntly. 当然 dāngrán = 'of course / naturally'. A: 你会去吗? B: 当然! = A: Will you go? B: Of course! Often paired with in confirmation: 当然了。 = Of course. 当然可以 = of course you can. 当然 confirms confidently — the answer is obvious. Be careful with tone — overusing 当然 in answers can sound cocky or condescending; sprinkle, don't overdo.

总之 / 不过 / 你知道吗 — summarizing, contrasting, engaging

总之 zǒngzhī = 'in short / to sum up / in any case'. Wraps up a discussion: 总之,我们要早点出发。 = In short, we need to leave early. 总之 is more conclusive than 反正; it explicitly summarizes. Common in giving advice or finalizing a plan. 不过 búguò = 'but / however / though'. SOFTER than 但是 dànshì. 不过 is conversational, 但是 is more standard / written. 这个不错,不过有点贵。 = This isn't bad, but it's a bit expensive. Use 不过 to add a mild qualification. 你知道吗 literally 'do you know (it)?' — used as an engagement / attention-getting marker, like English 'you know?' / 'guess what?'. 你知道吗,他昨天搬家了。 = You know what? He moved yesterday. Native speakers use 你知道吗 to set up a story or reveal — it draws the listener in. Variants: 你猜怎么着? = guess what?, 告诉你... = let me tell you...

Hedging and softening — 可能, 大概, 好像, 算是

Speakers don't always commit fully — hedges keep statements open. 可能 kěnéng = maybe / possibly. 可能他不来了。 = Maybe he's not coming. 大概 dàgài = approximately / probably. 大概十点。 = Around 10 o'clock. 好像 hǎoxiàng = it seems / it's like. 好像他不在家。 = Seems like he's not home. 算是 suànshì = counts as / sort of. 这算是我的错。 = I guess this counts as my fault. These hedges turn flat assertions into careful, polite, considered observations. 好像 is especially common — it's the all-purpose 'seems' for any uncertain claim. 算是 is great for tentative categorizations. Combine hedges and discourse markers liberally: 嗯,其实我也不太清楚,好像他可能不来了。 = Mm, actually I'm not really sure either, seems like he probably isn't coming. That kind of layered uncertainty is normal and natural in spoken Chinese.

Putting it all together — a natural mini-monologue

Here's how the markers stack in real speech: '嗯,其实我也想去。不过明天我有点忙。那么我们星期六去,怎么样?反正星期六我有空。然后我们可以吃饭,然后看电影,然后...嗯,你知道吗,那个新电影听说很好看。当然,如果你不喜欢看电影,那我们就吃饭。总之,星期六见!' = 'Mm, actually I want to go too. But tomorrow I'm a bit busy. So how about Saturday? Anyway, I'm free Saturday. Then we can eat, watch a movie, and... mm, you know, I heard that new movie is really good. Of course, if you don't like movies, then we'll just eat. In short, see you Saturday!' Notice how 嗯, 其实, 不过, 那么, 反正, 然后, 你知道吗, 当然, 总之 all weave the speech into a flowing, considered, polite statement. Each one earns its place; cumulatively they make the speaker sound natural rather than robotic.

Common patterns and traps

Trap 1: overusing one marker. Beginners cling to 然后 for every transition; advanced learners vary among 然后, 接着, 于是, 后来. Mix it up. Trap 2: confusing 那 (discourse 'so') with 那 (demonstrative 'that'). Context — 那个人 = that person; 那, 我们走吧 = so, let's go. Trap 3: using 但是 in casual speech where 不过 is warmer. 但是 is fine but feels sharper; 不过 is the friendly conversational choice. Trap 4: misusing 其实. 其实 introduces an actual / contrasting fact; don't use it just to start a sentence as filler. 其实我饿了 = actually I'm hungry (correction of an unstated assumption) ≠ just 'I'm hungry'. Trap 5: 反正 vs. 总之. 反正 = 'anyway / regardless' (dismissive); 总之 = 'in short / to summarize' (conclusive). They overlap but 总之 commits more; 反正 brushes off. Trap 6: 你知道吗 isn't always a real question. As a discourse marker, it's a setup ('you know what?') rather than asking if the listener knows the fact. Don't expect a yes/no answer; just continue the story. Trap 7: 嗯 has tones — ēn (rising) for questioning, én (mid) for thinking, èn (falling) for affirmation. The same character, different intonations carry different meanings.
